GIS is, simply, maps on a computer. GIS has the ability to take several different maps and place them on top of each other to display unique sets of data. With GIS you could take a geology map and a map of property boundaries and determine which properties were underlain by limestone bedrock, and therefore had a greater chance of sinkhole formation.GIS stores the map data in the computer. It allows easy access to the data and makes it easier to manipulate the data than if it were stored on paper maps. The LCCD uses programs such as ARC/INFO and ARCVIEW to perform these functions.
