What
is the
Conservation District?
The Lebanon
County Conservation District was organized at the request of
county citizens to provide conservation of the soil, water, woodland
and wildlife resources; to assist in watershed protection and
flood prevention; to preserve the tax base; and to protect and
promote the health and general welfare of the people of the county.
Lebanon County was declared a Conservation District by the county Commissioners
on May 23, 1949, in accordance with the provisions of the "Soil Conservation
Law" of 1945, Act 217 of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Under this
law the Lebanon County Conservation District may acquire real and personal
property or the rights therein, and accept contributions with the consent and
approval of the State Conservation Commission. Please contact the Lebanon Conservation
County District to discuss any protocols related to a gift or donation.
The Conservation District is a subdivision of state government, administered
by a Board of Directors, composed of at least four farm directors, no less
than two public directors and one County Commissioner. It operates under supervision
of the State Conservation Commission of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental
Protection. The Directors serve without pay and are chosen primarily for their
interest in soil and water conservation.
The District recognizes and respects the position and policies of all federal,
state, and local agencies, organizations and individuals working in the county
who have responsibilities or an interest in the field of soil and water conservation,
land use planning and related types of work.

What does the Conservation District
Do?
The Lebanon
County Conservation District is actively involved in Farmland
Preservation , gypsy moth management, Erosion
and Sedimentation Pollution Control , Nutrient
Management, Biosolids, the
Chesapeake Bay Program and NPDES Storm
Water Management permitting, Dirt and Gravel
Roads Program, and Watershed Improvement Opportunities and the Lebanon
County Conservation Awards Program.
The Lebanon County Conservation District differs from many other Conservation
Districts in that we staff a full-time Naturalist and
offer indoor and outdoor programs. Although the District doesn't maintain
its own nature facility, the naturalist travels to schools, parks, and
other outdoor areas to conduct a variety of hands-on lessons and activities.
INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Our conservation district offers both paying
and non-paying intership opportunities in a variety of broad-based disciplines.
Applicants should request an application and supply a resume and references.
Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation.
The LCCD also has a Geographic Information System (GIS) to
provide maps for a variety of applications. Groundwater potential, Soil
type, Geology, Preserved Farm and Agricultural Security Area maps are
available for certain areas upon request.
