Nutrient Management

The Nutrient Management Specialist works with any program related to the land application of nutrients. The Conservation District administers Act 38, Pennsylvania's Nutrient Management Law. The goal of this program is to increase farm productivity while decreasing any potential threat to water quality.

The Nutrient Management Law became effective as of October 1997. Since then we have received more than 100 nutrient management plans for farms in the Lebanon Valley. Recently, the nutrient management regulations were updated from the Act 6 guidlines to the Act 38 guidlines. There are several changes concerning the format of the nutrient management plan and the information required.

The Nutrient Management Specialist works closely with USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). NRCS representatives work as a separate entity in our office, making it easy for the NRCS and the Nutrient Specialist to cooporate on related projects. Reviewing plans for township permits and Farmland Preservation Applicants is also done by the Nutrient Management Specialist.
