Tires and mosquitoes

Tires are the ultimate breeding ground for container-breeding mosquitoes. Some mosquitoes will lay thousands of eggs in water that collects in tires. When the eggs hatch, mosquito larvae and pupae (shown in the image below) will live in the water until they turn into flying adults. Tires are notorious for collecting water and leaves, which the mosquito larvae feed on. Also, the black color of tires attracts mosquitoes, and the rubber insulates the larvae. It is believed that the Asian tiger mosquito arrived in the United States via the tire trade.

Mosquito life cycle.

In 2019, it was estimated that United States generated 263 million scrap tires. In Lebanon and Lancaster Counties, our programs hold annual tire collections to eliminate this mosquito breeding ground from the two counties.
